Release Day Love Giveaway!

This is a post about books and friendships (and bear with me because you can also win things!).

Sometime back in 2008 or so, I met my good friend and critique partner, Tiffany Schmidt, on Twitter. At the time, we were both agent-less writers with big dreams of one day getting published. The first time we exchanged manuscripts, I completely forgot to attach my comments about her book to my email. And yet, somehow our relationship prevailed! At different times, we secured separate agents, and finally, independently, realized our publishing dreams. So in 2012, when we discovered my debut novel, THROUGH TO YOU, and her debut, SEND ME A SIGN, would actually share a release date, we reeled over the improbability…and decided it was all the more reason to celebrate!

Continuing our unlikely publishing tradition, Tiffany and I share another release date today!

As of this moment, you can walk into a bookstore (or go online) and buy Tiffany’s sophomore novel, BRIGHT BEFORE SUNRISE along with a paperback copy of THROUGH TO YOU. You can run out the door this very moment and do that, if you so choose, OR… you can enter to win a signed copy of both books right here in the Release Day Love Giveaway!

Bright Before Sunrise - 300 dpi

 BRIGHT BEFORE SUNRISE:

Jonah and Brighton are about to have the most awkwardly awful night of their lives. For Jonah, every aspect  of his new life reminds him of what he has had to give up. All he wants is to be left alone. Brighton is popular,  pretty, and always there to help anyone . . . but has no idea of what she wants for herself. Her seemingly  perfect life is marred only by Jonah, the one person who won’t give her the time of day, but also makes her  feel, well, something. So when they are repeatedly thrown together over the course of one night, anything  can—and does—happen. Told in alternating chapters, this poignant, beautiful novel’s energy and tension,  amidst the humor and romance, builds to a new beginning of self-acceptance and hope. Through to You HC_FinalTHROUGH TO YOU:

Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. He’d give anything for just one more glimpse of her. But when Cam visits the site of Viv’s deadly car accident, he sees an apparition: her name is Nina, and she’s from a parallel world. When Cam follows her there and makes an unbelievable discovery, it’s as if all his wildest dreams have come true. But things are very different in this other world. . . . Nina is hiding a secret, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with the truth, he’s forced to make a choice that will change his life forever. Congratulations, Tiffany! There is no one else I’d rather share this exciting day with! <3

An Apocalyptic Thanks (giveaway!)

Oh, December…a time to reflect on the year that has gone by, bake holiday goodies, and try to catch up on reading all the freaking AMAZING books that came out over the last 12 months! I think it’s safe to say 2012 was a banner year for debut authors and I’ve been trying to think of a way to say thank you to all of the readers, book bloggers, and librarians who have maintained a steady level of enthusiasm for us throughout the year.

The other group I need to thank is The Apocalypsies. I never expected a bunch of competing debut authors to be so warm, understanding, and supportive during what sometimes truly felt like an apocalyptic year. Our group took 2012 by storm and our follow-up books will continue crashing series and standalones into 2013, 2014, 2015…and beyond! I’m honored to have shared this experience with all of you.

It seems appropriate to offer one last giveaway in 2012 that gives readers a chance to discover the books of my fellow debut authors.

So!

Please go to the Apocalypsies website to review our 150+ titles, then come back here and enter to win the Apocalypsies book of your choice! That’s right–ANY book (as long as it’s an Apocalypsies debut)!

This giveaway is international, so enter with abandon!

Thank you for making 2012 a year to remember for me, THROUGH TO YOU, and my fellow debut authors. <3

Through To You – Release Day!

Today is the day THROUGH TO YOU goes out into the world and ceases to be my book–it now belongs to all of YOU. For months now, it has been finding its way to librarians, book sellers, and reviewers, but TODAY anyone in North America can purchase a copy online or at their local book store! I know I’m a writer, but I can’t think of much to say at this point except:

Thank You

And I hope you enjoy the book.

And OH MY GOD!!!

;)

A book I wrote being on shelves and read by real people is a crazy thing to think about, and I’m not going to fill up this page with my overwhelmed thoughts on what this means to me. But it is stunning proof that sitting down with just a hint of an idea can eventually lead to this:

There is a playlist that helped inspire me to write this book available here, on Spotify, but you can also get the list of songs and what they meant to me while writing here, at Epic Reads.

THROUGH TO YOU is available for purchase through any of the following sites (also available as an ebook):

Indiebound

Barnes & Noble

Amazon

Books A Million

And while you’re there, another book I think you’ll LOVE comes out today: SEND ME A SIGN by my talented critique partner, Tiffany Schmidt. Be sure to check it out!

Thank you so much for sharing my release day glee! If you see a copy of THROUGH TO YOU in *the wild* please share a pic with me on Facebook or Twitter (@Emily_YA). I’d love to see it out there!

OH, and if you’re in the Denver area, you’re invited to the THROUGH TO YOU launch and book signing at The Tattered Cover (Highlands Ranch) this Friday, October 5 at 7:00pm!

And now…back to revising Book 2!

:)

A Book Is Born

Please excuse my lack of preamble, niceties, etc, because…

LOOK WHAT CAME IN THE MAIL!

It’s a real live book with a front cover, a back cover, and even inside flaps! The title GLITTERS in the light! You may observe the barcode, ISBN, and swanky new QR code that will send you to a special THROUGH TO YOU mobile site on your smartphone! Also, it has THESE:

A title page AND acknowledgments page (never before seen, as it wasn’t printed in the ARC, and there were so MANY important people to thank!) But the coolest part is…

…my book has second dimension under the dust jacket:

It took me two hours of staring at the cover and flipping through the finished pages before I remembered to take the jacket OFF and look underneath. It’s SO BEAUTIFUL! The picture doesn’t do it justice–that is shiny GREEN foil spelling out the title and my name! It feels like a gorgeous secret…sort of like the one Cam finds inside the book.

You can have one of these beautiful hardcovers of your very own too in just two weeks! Here are links to preorder at The Tattered Cover, Indiebound, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, & Books A Million

ARC Giveaway Winner!

I so wish I had more than one ARC to give away just now, but stay tuned here and on my Facebook page because there WILL be other opportunities between now and October 2nd–I promise! And if you haven’t already, add THROUGH TO YOU on Goodreads because I have it on good authority there will be additional chances there.

;)

And now, without further ado, the winner of the *signed* ARC of THROUGH TO YOU is:

Christina Rita Condomaros

Thanks everyone, once again, for participating! And to keep this fun, here are just a few of the MANY amazing titles I’m looking forward to this year. What other 2012 books are you waiting for??

THROUGH TO YOU – Cover Reveal – and ARC giveaway!

I am beyond excited to share at last!

THROUGH TO YOU will be out October 2nd from Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins!

Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. Viv was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his identity after a career-ending football injury, picking up the pieces when his home life shattered, and healing his pain long after the pain meds wore off. And now, he’d give anything for one more glimpse of her. But when Cam makes a visit to the site of Viv’s deadly car accident, he sees some kind of apparition. And it isn’t Viv.

The apparition’s name is Nina, and she’s not a ghost. She’s a girl from a parallel world, and in this world, Viv is still alive. Cam can’t believe his wildest dreams have come true. All he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But things are different in this other world: Viv and Cam have both made very different choices, things between them have changed in unexpected ways, and Viv isn’t the same girl he remembers. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets, too, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become, and the part Nina played in his parallel story, he’s forced to choose—stay with Viv or let her go—before the window closes between them once and for all.

Words cannot express how truly thrilled I am with this cover. Balzer+Bray blew me away with the image, the colors, the metaphor–everything! And just in time for the big reveal, I received my very first ARCs! I cannot think of a better way to celebrate this gorgeous cover than to give away a signed ARC of THROUGH TO YOU on my Facebook Page.

ARC Giveaway: If you would like to win a signed ARC of THROUGH TO YOU, simply ‘Like’ and leave a comment HERE, on my Facebook Page stating you would like to be entered. That’s all you have to do! Entries are open through Friday, March 2nd. A winner will be announced Monday, March 5th.

THROUGH TO YOU is also available for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

~*~

But wait, there’s more! Since it’s so unfair that only one person will win an ARC this time, I have a consolation prize! The first 250 people to enter their name and address in the following form will receive one of my beautiful THROUGH TO YOU bookmarks pictured below (names and addresses will ONLY be used for this purpose)! Note: this form is only for bookmarks–you cannot win an ARC if you don’t enter on Facebook.

.                 .

Thank you all for sharing the cover love with me! :D

New Release Date!

Things have been BUSY around here, as you can probably guess! I’ve been working away on Book 2, planning a honeymoon my husband and I should have taken a decade ago, and I have seen the cover art for THROUGH TO YOU! It is killing me not to share…but all in good time. :)

Anyway, the big news I discovered this week is that THROUGH TO YOU will be released seven weeks earlier than originally planned! This is exciting in at least 1000 different ways, but anyway, if you’ve been looking forward to picking up the book, it will now be hitting shelves on:

OCTOBER 2, 2012

My calendar is marked–now to make some serious release plans! Stay tuned…cover reveal coming soon!

2012 Brings TWO Special Debuts

I rarely get very personal on this blog, but today I’m just going to go all crazy whats-going-on-with-me, so…LOOK OUT!

2012 was already set to be one of the biggest years of my life. I have been entirely focused on NOVEMBER 20 as the date to end all dates (no, they haven’t rescheduled the apocalypse, but it IS when that little book of mine comes out).

However, my husband, Stefan, and I now have a second date to get excited about: the first week of June. Spring will be in full swing, flowers will be blooming, and we’ll be welcoming our very first baby into the world. Yes…I’m pregnant!

We’re totally excited. Stefan and I met on the internet when we were both still in high school. A classic YA love story, and maybe one day I’ll write about it. We got married twelve years ago, and I’m pretty sure most of our family members gave up on us ever having children. What were we waiting for? Maybe something to celebrate. So the coolest thing about 2012 is: within six months Baby makes his/her debut, and six months after that, we can celebrate as a family for the debut of THROUGH TO YOU.

Life is amazing. <3

An Anniversary Giveaway!

Today is a very special day. Just thinking about it makes me totally overwhelmed and appreciative and blows my mind anew.

One year ago today, my amazing agent, Mary Kole, of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency, offered me representation. Her email popped up on my Blackberry at 7:30am the day after I received my very first rejection for my new novel, THROUGH TO YOU. I about had a heart attack when I saw who it was from, and after I read the email, I had my husband read it too, just to make sure I wasn’t delusional. I won’t hesitate to say the things that have happened in the year since have changed my life irreversibly. THROUGH TO YOU will be coming out November 20, 2012 from Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins (the cover is currently in development–can’t wait to share it with all of you), Paramount Pictures has purchased the film option rights, and I’m hard at work on a second standalone book for B+B.

So, as you can tell, today is a big day for me! I had NO idea one year ago what lay in store for me. I was so focused on just getting an agent, I proceeded to spend hours that day sifting through message board threads trying to figure out what happens next. The answer is: a lot! I have learned so much, had so many great experiences, and am so grateful. And now I’d like to celebrate with:

A GIVEAWAY!

My very first giveaway – be gentle. ;)

So, the important question: what can you win??

SIGNED hardcover copies of SUPERNATURALLY by the lovely Kiersten White, and A BEAUTIFUL DARK by the fabulous Jocelyn Davies!  …and just for fun, I’ll throw in some awesome Apocalypsies bookmarks and buttons. I had the pleasure of meeting Kiersten and Jocelyn when they came to The Tattered Cover on the Dark Days tour. They are both fellow HarperCollins authors, so I figured what better books to feature for my agent anniversary and very first giveaway? Did I mention these books are signed?

:)

The rules are very simple:

All you have to do is leave a comment right here on this blog post saying you’d like to enter (if you’re reading this on Facebook or Goodreads, please come HERE to my website to comment or I may not see your entry). YOU WILL BE ENTERED TWICE if you indicate in your comment that you have LIKED my Facebook page, which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/ehainsworthbooks (please be truthful, I’ll be checking). This counts for anyone who has already LIKED my page too. Just remind me!

Entries will be open until this Friday, November 18th, at 5:00pm Pacific (sorry, due to shipping costs this giveaway is only open to those with addresses in the continental U.S.). One lucky winner will be chosen at random and announced here next week. Will it be you?

A Successful Query Letter

Me with Mary Kole in Los Angeles :)

(I am cross-posting this with the BRAVE NEW WORDS blog since it might actually be helpful to post my query letter on my own blog)

Since I previously blogged rather ecstatically HERE about signing with Mary Kole, I thought I’d focus this Agent Story post on the query letter that set my publication journey in motion. I hadn’t looked at my query since late last year when I signed with Mary, and I had no idea re-reading it would fill me with all of the same dread and anxiety it did when I originally sent it! Query Letter Stomachache is apparently not a curable condition.

That said, before you read it, I feel the need to put out a few disclaimers (which may also serve as warnings for those still in the trenches):

1) I sound completely stuffed. I was trying to be business-like and professional, and I think I succeeded, but ZERO personality shines through in this letter. Yes, Mary offered representation anyway, and I realize there’s a delicate balance between personality and weirdo, but use your best judgment.

2) THROUGH TO YOU is really not a paranormal novel. At the time I was very much under the impression “science fiction” was still a dirty word in YA. A lot has changed in nine months. If I queried today I might call it “light sci-fi,” a term I heard more than once at SCBWI this summer.

3) THROUGH TO YOU is also not magical realism! I realized that after I read IMAGINARY GIRLS by Nova Ren Suma. If you want magical realism, read her book! My use of the term is further evidence of me being “sci-fi” phobic.

4) Note the previous rejection and lack of any publication credits (okay, to be fair, I did have an article published in a dog grooming magazine, but that was notrelevant). Everyone gets rejected and everyone has to get their first publication somewhere. Mary offered representation because she liked THIS book.

All right, with all of that aside, I feel slightly less embarrassed posting this for the entire internet to see:

Dear Ms. Kole,

I was in touch with you last year about a previous novel, [REDACTED], at which time you encouraged me to submit other work to you in the future. I thought you might be interested in my latest YA paranormal novel, THROUGH TO YOU. It is complete at 59,000 words.

The day eighteen-year-old Camden Pike sees a ghost is the day he assumes he’s finally lost it. For the last two months, he’s been torturing himself over why he walked away from the car accident that killed his girlfriend, Viv. She was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his identity after an injury ended his football career, and picking up the pieces when his home life shattered. With Viv at his side, his pain was manageable–she was all that mattered. He’d give anything for one glimpse of her again. But now there’s a ghost…and it isn’t her.

Cam quickly realizes the apparition, Nina, is not a ghost at all. She’s a girl from another world–one where Cam was the one who died, and Viv is alive and well. Once he learns this, all he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But the accident isn’t the only thing different about this other world–Viv and Cam both made very different choices here that changed things between them. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets and the window between the worlds isshrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become, he’s forced to choose–stay with her, or let her go–before the window closes between them once and for all.

THROUGH TO YOU is a book that explores themes of unhealthy relationships and the power of choices within a magical realist atmosphere. Per your submissions guidelines, I have included the first ten pages below. A full manuscript is available upon request. I am currently querying other agents at this time. I appreciate you taking the time to consider my work.

Sincerely,

Emily Hainsworth
