Parting with a Character Name

I finally acknowledged something this weekend that’s been bothering me for a while. One of my supporting character’s name has to change, and I’m not happy about it. Not because I’m particularly married to the name or anything. It’s Laurel, and has been since the day I started writing this novel. I picked it because it was earthy, pagan, and natural. I just liked it. But it’s not her.

Laurel is going to become Marla for many, many reasons that all fit in the story and my head. It’s who she is. But she will always be Laurel to me. I like Laurel better. I’m not a big fan of Marla, but that’s how it needs to be – and I want to tell her I’m sorry.
